Weather models need observations of the world they are trying to predict. Over the ocean, collecting those observations is an engineering challenge: the area is vast and conditions change between measurements.
Care Weather is developing Veery, a satellite radar designed around a technique called scatterometry. Radar signals reflect differently from an ocean surface as its roughness changes. Observations from multiple viewing angles can be used to estimate wind speed and direction.
Our first product focus is ocean surface vector winds. More frequent observations could give forecast models fresher inputs and help scientists follow weather systems as they evolve.
We build and operate our satellites, carrying lessons from hardware, software, testing, and flight into the next iteration. This is how we intend to move from individual flight experiments toward a repeatable observing system.
